Day of the Dead Sugar Skull Craft for Kids

A super simple way to celebrate Day of the Dead or Dia de Muertos with kids is to craft DIY sugar skull lollipops! The treats were a colorful and creative way to learn about a holiday from a different culture.

We purchased these skull lollipops on sale after Halloween last year. It worked out perfectly since Day of the Dead is a three day celebration spanning from October 31st to November 2nd. While we made these sugar skulls last year I waited until this year to share them with you just in time for the holidays once again!

Day of the Dead is a celebration of extra interest for our family as a way for our living children to connect with and remember their sister Violet. As their momma, I am always researching and creating ways we can include her in our lives forever.

love that the Mexican culture has a happy and healthy spiritual connection with their loved ones who have died. November 1st is All Saints' Day specifically to celebrate children and babies who have passed away. Then November 2nd is Violet's birthday so you can see how this season and celebration is exceptionally meaningful to us!

We used Sharpies to decorate the hard white candy lollipops to look like sugar skulls after looking at beautiful examples online. You could try these edible food markers if you'd like to eat the treats after decorating them!

I love how vibrant this cultural craft turned out! Using the purchased skull lollipops really made the prep super simple. E even wanted to create a whole scene for her skulls.
