Bear Sees Colors Animal Coloring Activity

We love Karma Wilson's Bear books series! This month for our Book Club Play Date we read Bear Sees Colors. We presented the kids with a colorful pre-writing craft activity that included the animal characters from the story!

This activity would be perfect for a preschool unit theme about colors!

Can I be honest with you? I was a bit baffled by what craft we could do for Bear Sees Colors. I knew I wanted to include some fine motor practice as well.

Then one evening in the bathtub our toddler took his bath crayons and began to color his animal toys that he carries with him everywhere.

We read Bear Sees Colors then selected the animal figures that represented the characters in the story.
One by one we said a color just like the pattern of the book: "Bear sees...pink!" as the kids colored the animals.

Coloring the animals was fantastic fine motor practice and developed pre-writing skills! The kids had to hold the animals as they worked. If you have a reluctant writer this is a fabulous way to get a writing utensil in their hands!

When we were finished coloring, I set out a dish of soapy water with wash cloths. The animals "took a bath" as we scrubbed the washable crayon off of them.

The animals with textured fur did take a bit of work to get all of the color off if that is concerning to you! We didn't mind a bit as creativity and pre-writing practice is a priority in our house (and I know these favorite animals will come clean eventually)!
