Fish Color Matching on the Light Table

Color matching is one of the pre-cursor skills to sorting items by different attributes. It's a vital early math skill for preschoolers! We made color sorting extra fun by creating an under the sea theme on the light table! Our kids matched the scales to the fish in this colorful game.

I drew fish on the non-sticky side of contact paper with colorful Sharpie markers. I cut the fish shapes out and taped them onto our light table removing the protective paper. We were left with a school of sticky and colored fish!

As soon as I added our colorful transparent counters our toddler D knew what to do! He took right to the task of matching the counter colors to the fish colors beginning with their eyes. It was fantastic fine motor work for him, too!

The sticky contact paper allowed the counters to remain on the fish as the kids worked. We overlapped some of the counters like real fishy scales. We worked on patterns, color matching, color names, and even made a rainbow fish!
