Sticky Ten Frames

We love to practice addition and subtraction math facts with ten frames. To add (pun intended) an extra bit of fun and vertical space practice, we created sticky ten frames!

Practice fine motor skills and math facts with this vertical sticky ten frames activity for kids!

You can either use these sticky ten frames as a problem of the day for kids to solve or do several math facts at one time like we did on our easel. I drew the ten frames on the non-sticky side of a piece of contact paper. We took off the paper backing and used pretty washi tape to attach the contact paper to our easel. Finally, we used heart erasers from the Target dollar spot for our counters. I always pick these up each season to have fun manipulatives for our math activities!

Working and writing on a vertical space is great for developing arm, shoulder, and fine motor muscles for kids. Our daughter looked at the addition problem and began by adding the eight hearts to her ten frame.

Next she counted and added seven more hearts to her ten frames to get the sum of fifteen which she wrote on the board (as seen in our title image).

She wanted to create a subtraction problem for me. We discussed how you start with the first number as the amount on the ten frames then you take off the next number to see how many hearts are left. She enjoyed being both the teacher and the student with our hands on sticky ten frame math activity!

  2. Ten frames is something we don't use in the UK but I seriously do not know why after seeing it in action. It makes perfect sense for little ones.
