When your littlest learners are still sometimes putting things in their mouths you might be worried about giving them sensory recipes to explore. That was certainly the cause in our house when we created our Nutella play dough. Excited to experiment with other edible dough recipes, we headed to the kitchen cabinets again and voila! We created a recipe for edible marshmallow Peeps play dough.

Oh, Peeps. The sugary seasonal treat that people seem to either love or loathe. How about you? We always end up with extras leftover so trying to make up a play dough recipe was the perfect way to use them up!
Our kids love play dough and it's great for working little fingers to start to practice fine motor skills that will be used later when writing. We always have a stash of the store bought Play Doh because I can't always create a Pinterest worthy recipe. This Peeps one just happened to take off over there.
No matter what dough you use sensory play is so beneficial for kids! Be sure to follow our 12 Months of Sensory Dough series for plenty of recipes and ideas.
To try our Peeps play dough recipe, you will need:
- Peeps of any type and color (We used eight.)- Corn starch
- Water
We began by melting the Peeps with a teaspoon of water in the microwave for 45 seconds. Who doesn't love microwaving Peeps? It's a childhood rite of passage.
Some Peeps lost their eyes in the melting process. It's tragic, really, but for a good cause. You can also find the eyes in the dough later as you play with it. (I never thought I'd type that sentence.)
After the marshmallow Peeps were melted we added a teaspoon of oil. This helps the melted marshmallow come out of the microwave safe bowl. Stir to loosen them but leave the melted Peeps in the bowl to cool.
While the Peeps are cooling, add 1/3 to 1/2 corn starch to a different bowl. Press the corn starch down to coat the bottom of the bowl as much as possible.
Add the melted marshmallow Peep mixture to the bowl of corn starch. Gently use a spatula to fold the corn starch over and into the Peeps.
You and your kids will want to get your hands in at this point (which is great fine motor exercise) but make sure the hands are well coated in corn starch first! The dough will remain sticky until it's complete.
It is also quite stretchy like chewed bubble gum. Add a bit more corn starch if you need to but keep mixing and folding until the dough no longer sticks to your hands!

Coat your work surface with more corn starch and dump out the dough. Continue to knead the mixture until it reaches a play dough consistency.

Cool idea! And I love your sense of humor in this post!
ReplyDeleteYou always get me, Dyan!
DeleteI'm not sure we'll get past the microwaving. At which point, I will automatically add rice krispies... we'll try!
ReplyDeleteThat sounds equally as fun and tempting!
DeleteFUN!! MB would love this! I love all the literacy elements you did with it too! What a great time!
ReplyDeleteHow weird is it that I've never microwaved peeps? I must also try doing (and tasting) that too!
(PS.. I'm not sure what's up with my deleted comment above... I don't remember deleting but I did walk away to get more coffee with a toddler near the keyboard, when I came back it was on a weird screen and when I clicked back it said my content was deleted)
I guess several people haven't microwaved Peeps but we loved trying it growing up because they get HUGE!
DeleteThis sounds like fun! Never had a peeps in my life, this gives me an excuse to try them ;)
ReplyDeleteYes, if you don't like them to eat plain, you can play!
DeleteThis is so awesome! I love how you made little letter manipulatives too. I am one of the rare people who has never microwaved a peep. I think I need to add that to my to-do list this week. Haha!
ReplyDeleteDefinitely try it and let me know what you think!
DeleteUsing Peeps is such a fun idea! Love this!
ReplyDeleteThank you!
DeleteThis is the perfect use for peeps!
ReplyDeleteWhat a great recipe! Off to share:)
ReplyDeleteHi im live in the uk so not sure what peeps are:( are normal marshmallows just as good when trying out this recipe? X
ReplyDeleteYes, regular marshmallows should work just fine as well!
DeleteHow long will the peep play dough keep? Could I make it ahead an hour and I would be good for a class to play with?
ReplyDeleteYou could definitely make ahead! We refrigerated ours and it got quite hard but softened up when it was room temperature again.
DeleteI love this idea but I am not sure we would ever have any peeps to do this with, we eat them too fast
ReplyDeleteWhat fun play dough! I love this and we may need to try it yet this season.
ReplyDeleteSo fun! Pinned to use this weekend.
ReplyDeleteMy grand kids will have fun with this. Thanks!
