Peeps Play Dough Recipe

When your littlest learners are still sometimes putting things in their mouths you might be worried about giving them sensory recipes to explore. That was certainly the cause in our house when we created our Nutella play dough. Excited to experiment with other edible dough recipes, we headed to the kitchen cabinets again and voila! We created a recipe for edible marshmallow Peeps play dough.

Oh, Peeps. The sugary seasonal treat that people seem to either love or loathe. How about you? We always end up with extras leftover so trying to make up a play dough recipe was the perfect way to use them up! 

Our kids love play dough and it's great for working little fingers to start to practice fine motor skills that will be used later when writing. We always have a stash of the store bought Play Doh because I can't always create a Pinterest worthy recipe. This Peeps one just happened to take off over there.

To try our Peeps play dough recipe, you will need:

- Peeps of any type and color (We used eight.)
- Corn starch

- Vegetable oil

- Water

We began by melting the Peeps with a teaspoon of water in the microwave for 45 seconds. Who doesn't love microwaving Peeps?  It's a childhood rite of passage.

Some Peeps lost their eyes in the melting process. It's tragic, really, but for a good cause. You can also find the eyes in the dough later as you play with it. (I never thought I'd type that sentence.)  

After the marshmallow Peeps were melted we added a teaspoon of oil. This helps the melted marshmallow come out of the microwave safe bowl. Stir to loosen them but leave the melted Peeps in the bowl to cool.

While the Peeps are cooling, add 1/3 to 1/2 corn starch to a different bowl. Press the corn starch down to coat the bottom of the bowl as much as possible. 

Add the melted marshmallow Peep mixture to the bowl of corn starch. Gently use a spatula to fold the corn starch over and into the Peeps. 

You and your kids will want to get your hands in at this point (which is great fine motor exercise) but make sure the hands are well coated in corn starch first! The dough will remain sticky until it's complete.

It is also quite stretchy like chewed bubble gum. Add a bit more corn starch if you need to but keep mixing and folding until the dough no longer sticks to your hands!

Coat your work surface with more corn starch and dump out the dough. Continue to knead the mixture until it reaches a play dough consistency.
