Sand Castle Puffy Paint Art

We made lovely puffy paint sand castle art with a new recipe we created. It's the perfect summer sensory craft!

We began by drawing sand castles on cardstock. Our preschooler and I named the shapes we were using in our drawings. Our toddler just loved holding a pencil, scribbling, and being invited to join us in creating!

Next we adapted Housing a Forest's microwave puffy paint recipe that we've used in our Cardboard Cake Decorating and Egg Carton Volcanoes! We made as directed and then mixed in a good amount of sand until the paint looked like wet cement.

It was so much fun to brush on to our sand castle drawings with paintbrushes, toothbrushes, or our fingers! What a lovely texture!

We popped the paintings into the microwave for about 45 seconds. The cardstock did buckle a little as the paint puffed but we carefully flattened our artwork out once it cooled.

We added shells we've collected to our castles with glue. Wouldn't this make the perfect keepsake after a beach vacation?

  3. This is such a fantastic idea! Our kids did a project recently where they used sand and glue but it did not have the puffy 3D effect yours has. We will have to try this out!
