Castles & Moats to Learn Area and Perimeter

We reviewed how to calculate area and perimeter by designing our own castles and moats! This math activity goes along with The Magic Tree House The Knights at Dawn.

Next in the Magic Tree House series is the second book Knights at Dawn. We also borrowed the companion book Knights & Castles which inspired us to design our own castles with moats to protect them!

Using graph paper, I drew my own castle then showed our kids how to calculate area and perimeter. For our fourth grader, this was a review of what she learned last year in third grade. Our first grader counted the perimeter and area.

Our oldest decided to also design the inside of her castle as well as a castle for her cat. You can see how this project inspires a lot of creative math!
