Room on the Broom Sensory Bin

Room on the Broom by Julia Donaldson is the perfect book for Halloween! We are joining up with the Virtual Book Club for Kids to create an extension activity to retell this popular story. We created a Room on the Broom sensory bin!

To create our sensory bin we searched the house to find any objects or characters that we could use to retell Room on the Broom. Different kinds and sizes of beans and foam Autumn leaves were our main sensory bin filler. We added a dollhouse broom, a felt witch's hat, a cat, a dog, a frog, a bird, a twig, a pine cone, a paper lily, a plastic bone, and a cauldron. We made the red dragon from craft foam, the yellow hair bow from construction paper, and the magic wand with a lollipop stick and felt stars! Our preschooler loved paging through the book with me to name props we needed to add!

We are big on sensory play at our house. The fine motor and sensory benefits alone are a huge motivation but by creating a story extension sensory bin we are also adding language skills, discussing literacy elements, and retelling the story together.

As part of our homeschool preschool curriculum this week, we used Julia Donaldson's Room on the Broom for our Shared Reading book each day. We read and re-read the story together daily discussing different concepts of print and literacy elements on different days. Yesterday we listed and drew the characters or people and animals in the story.

When it came time to create our sensory bin our preschooler listed each character. She wanted to be the witch herself so she grabbed this hat from her dress up bin! Here she is acting out the part of the frog graciously returning her lost wand to her!

The witch was very frightened when the dragon threatened to feast on her for lunch! Oh, what an actress! E loved retelling and acting out this part the best.

The beans even doubled as a wart on this witch's nose! Have you read Room on the Broom or any of Julia Donaldson's many other books? We'd love to hear about your favorite!
