How to Plan and Host a Book Club Play Date for Kids

The best start to education you can give to your kids is to read to them every day! One way to encourage a love for reading is to plan a play date around book themed activities! Invite over a few friends, read a favorite story, and have a snack, game, craft, and activity to go along with the book.

What is a Book Club Play Date?

What: Choose a book that your child loves! Invite over a few friends, read the story, and enjoy themed activities that go with the book!

Who: Invite a few children that are around the same age as your child and their parents or caregivers if you'd like extra adult hands to help!

When: Plan a one time event, a book themed birthday party, or a regular play date

Where: Your house, the park, or another neutral location.

Why: To foster a love of reading with literacy themed activities!

Tips for Book Club Play Dates:

Tips from House of Burke who hosts regular Baby Book Clubs:

- Be selective with your group! There is fine line between fun and chaotic!

- Make sure that nobody in your group is allergic to any of your materials.

- Announce the book and any materials you would like guests to contribute beforehand so they have plenty of time to get everything together.

- Don't be afraid to get messy as a group.

- Reading your book at the beginning of the meeting and at the end helps to keep little ones focused on the concept throughout the play date!
