All About Me Math Race

For our preschool All About Me theme, we're practicing number identification with a gross motor math race! People retain information faster and better if it is relevant to their lives. Preschoolers are no different and adding movement increases understanding as well.

All About Me Preschool Unit: Kids race to get numbers to answer questions!

We set our foam numbers out in numerical order. This is a task that you can invite the children to help you with or set up before hand. Alternatively you could write the numbers with sidewalk chalk either on a number line when first teaching or mixed up for review.

The kids started at the bottom of the driveway with me. When I asked an All About Me math question, they had to race up to find the correct number. They brought it back relay race style.

First I asked them their age so both kids could run at once. For a classroom setting, it might make more sense to take turns and cheer each other on. If you have students that require a bit more support in number identification, you can have another adult up at the number line helping them find the numeral they need.

How many candles will be on your next birthday cake?
What is your bedtime?
