Planet Hop

Do you have a kinesthetic learner or a kid that loves to move? We always love to work gross motor movement into our activities! We came up with a way to play while learning the names and order of the planets in our solar system.

Kids learn the order of the planets in our solar system as they move and hop in this gross motor game!

We absolutely love the Hop Around Steps from Discount School Supply! We discovered that we could use a dry erase marker to write the names of our plants (and the sun) on the steps then later wipe away the words with a baby wipe.

Disclaimer: These steps aren't advertised as dry erase so test a small area before you write or use post-it notes if you aren't sure the markers will come off!

Once the planets were all represented, I placed the sun at one side of the room. Our daughter had to read and order the planets correctly.

She was moving as she put the planets in order and then I challenged her to walk or hop along the Hop Around Steps in order as she named the planets, too!

She recited the planetary order several times as she balanced on the Hop Around Steps! My head is already full of other ideas of ways we can adapt this idea for other subjects.
