Plastic Bottle Water Tower for Kids

We have been having so much fun playing with water this summer from our homemade water wall to gross motor color mixing. Our latest creation was a water funneling tower made from recycled plastic bottles!

We don't often drink bottled water but we went through a lot of it on our beach vacation this year. When I realized that the 3 liter Deer Park water bottles stacked we just had to keep them! The kids were instantly building them into towers taller than they were when I had a different idea of how we could use these recycled bottles for water play.

I left one bottle plain but drilled holes in the bottom of the others. Once the bottles were stacked the water would funnel down through. The unique design of these recycled containers makes them perfect for so many ways to explore and play!

Look at the teamwork, engineering, and planning taking place between our preschoolers! They were learning about gravity, the properties of a liquid, and cause and effect.

We used two bottles with primary colors to mix together to create our secondary colors. Again, because of the way these bottles are shaped we could add a color to each but the water wouldn't flow down to the next bottle until the kids added more plain water through the funnel.

Once the water level reached the peak of the bottom where the holes were drilled it would begin to flow down and mix with the color below allowing the kids time to investigate what was happening. They made predictions about the colors that would be created.

This post is a part of the series Project Recycle & Create. This month's material was plastic bottles.
