Construction Truck Small World Play

If your kids love digging with construction vehicles, we have the perfect substitute for gravel, dirt, or rocks. The idea came about by accident but it led to the most wonderful construction truck small world play!

I would have never thought to use this for construction vehicle play but it's taste safe and easy to make for kids!

Our daughter loves to break gender stereotypes. She has her own set of construction vehicles. Driving the trucks and pushing around materials is great fine motor practice but don't have a sand box or dirt pile. This alternative sensory bin filler allowed her to play inside with minimal mess.

This time we set out the trucks on a rimmed baking sheet with a lid under it. We most often use a low and long storage container as a sensory bin because you can put the lid on it for easy clean up. A blanket under always helps if you're playing inside, too!

So how did we come to create play rocks by accident? We were dying pasta for our spring sensory bin when I made one batch of purple a little too dark. I decided to add black food coloring to that bowl and instantly envisioned rocks for a toy construction site!

You can get detailed instructions and tips on how to dye acini di pepe pasta. This is the perfect substitute for real rocks or sand if your toddler is into construction vehicles but is still mouthing sensory play items at times.

  2. I love this idea. I use a variety of flours (corn, wholewheat, buckwheat, white, etc) for my son. He always asks for more whenever I bake :-) I might have to add some pasta as "boulders"
