How to Freeze Your Own Cookie Dough

There is nothing better than freshly baked cookies but you don't always have the time or energy to make them from scratch. Instead of store bought frozen cookie dough we'll show you how to freeze your own cookie dough for homemade delicious treats anytime!

This post is part of our Cooking with Kids series where we are working our way through the alphabet one dish at a time! D is for dough and our favorite is chocolate chip cookies! We've even discovered a secret for making the best chocolate chip cookies even better!

The secret is to dissolve the baking soda in hot water before adding it to the recipe. I don't know how it works but this makes the cookies soft on the inside but a bit crispy on the edges. They are delicious baked immediately or frozen to be baked fresh later. Trust me, you must try this secret for the perfect chocolate chip cookies!

Our preschooler loves using our Kitchen Helper to safely reach the counters to help me cook and bake.

The Best Chocolate Chip Cookies

1 cup of butter, softened
1 cup sugar
1 cup packed brown sugar
2 eggs
2 tsp vanilla
1 tsp baking soda dissolved in 2 tsp hot water
1/4 tsp salt
3 leveled cups flour
2 cups chocolate chips

Using an electric mixer, blend the soft butter with both types of sugar. Mix in the eggs one at a time then use a spoon to stir in the vanilla, baking soda/water mixture, and salt. Add in the flour slowly until a dough has formed then mix in the chocolate chips.

You can either drop this dough on a cookie sheet to bake at 350 degrees for 12 to 14 minutes (or until slightly brown on the edges) or you can continue on with our directions for how to freeze the dough for later. My best advice is to freeze some and bake some immediately too.

Roll the dough into even balls and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Rolling the balls is great fine motor practice for kids! Freeze the cookie dough for at least an hour before transferring to a freezer bag. Since you're pre-frozen the balls the cookies won't stick together. You can grab as many or as few as you'd like to have fresh cookies any time! Bake them straight out of the freezer at the same temperature (350 degrees) for a few more minutes than the recipe recommends for fresh ones (so 14 - 16 minutes). You can have some baking for a play date, a new neighbor, to cheer up a friend, or gift them frozen to someone you love to have their own baking day without the work or clean up!

I love the math involved with this activity, too. E was counting how many cookies were in each row to calculate how many we had left to freeze versus how many we were baking right away. She can help me figure out how many people we are serving and how many cookies we'll need if we want to offer each person a certain amount. The learning involved in cooking with kids spans all subject areas!
